New Butchertown is the industrial neighborhood in San Francisco's southeastern quadrant centered on the Islais Creek Channel, bounded by Cesar Chavez Street to the north, Interstate 280 to the west, Industrial Street and Oakdale Avenue to the south, and Third Street to the east. The name derives from the 'New Butchertown' designation applied in 1871, when the city relocated its meatpacking industry from the original Butchertown (in the present-day Dogpatch) to the Islais Creek tidal flats — an area whose distance from residential neighborhoods and whose tidal creek system made it suitable for the waste disposal the industry required. By 1877 all eighteen of the city's slaughterhouses had relocated to this area, joined by tanneries, fertilizer plants, wool pulleries, and tallow works. The final slaughterhouse in the district closed in 1971.

Today New Butchertown remains one of San Francisco's few surviving industrial sectors, housing the city's wholesale produce market and various manufacturing and distribution businesses along the Islais Creek Channel. Two meat rendering plants still operate in the neighborhood — a direct industrial continuity spanning more than 150 years. The area is also home to the SF Port's Islais Creek Terminal and the Third Street Bridge, a bascule drawbridge carrying the T Third Street Muni Metro line.
