New Eastside didn't exist as usable land until the twentieth century — the ground beneath it was once open water and, later, the rail yards of the Illinois Central Railroad, filled in part with debris from the Great Chicago Fire of 1871, the same landfill process that built neighboring Streeterville. After World War II the railroad sold its air rights over the yards, and in 1955 Mayor Richard J. Daley presided over the opening of One Prudential Plaza, Chicago's first new downtown skyscraper in 21 years and, at the time, its tallest building.

Illinois Center, approved as a planned development in 1969, filled out the neighborhood's western half through the 1970s and 1980s, while the six-acre Lakeshore East park, part of a 2002 master plan by Magellan Development and Skidmore, Owings & Merrill, gave the newer eastern half its own green centerpiece.

Built entirely on reclaimed land and railroad air rights, New Eastside is Chicago's most literal proof that a neighborhood can be made from scratch. MY-NHD's collection marks that manufactured, and thoroughly Chicago, origin story.
