Noble Square takes its name from Noble Street, honoring early Chicago civic leaders John and Mark Noble, combined with the square shape of Eckhart Park at its center. Polish immigrants settled the area early, and it remained a dominant Polish enclave through most of the twentieth century as part of the larger West Town community area that grew rapidly after the Great Chicago Fire of 1871 pushed workers seeking affordable wood-frame housing into the district.

St. Stanislaus Kostka Church, built in 1871 and one of the neighborhood's two "Polish Cathedral"-style churches, still anchors the community, while Erie Neighborhood House, a settlement house agency that has operated here since 1870, remains one of the longest continuously running social service organizations in the city.

Named for a park's shape and a family's civic service, built up by Polish immigrant labor after the fire — Noble Square's identity is stitched into its streets. MY-NHD's collection is a way to wear that stitched-together history.
