Neighborhood History

Noe Valley takes its name from José de Jesús Noé, the last Mexican alcalde of Yerba Buena, who owned the 4,443-acre Rancho San Miguel that once covered this ground. Entrepreneur John Meirs Horner laid out the neighborhood's street grid in the Victorian era, and development accelerated after the 1906 earthquake, when families displaced from North Beach and elsewhere resettled here on ground considered safer.

That rebuilding left Noe Valley with one of the city's highest concentrations of row houses, block after block of Victorian and Edwardian homes built efficiently for working-class families. Twin Peaks rises just to the west, shielding the valley from the fog that rolls over the rest of the city.
