Neighborhood History

North Beach takes its name from a shoreline cove long since filled in in the late 1800s to make way for docks and warehouses. Waves of Italian immigrants arriving after the 1906 earthquake gave the rebuilt neighborhood its enduring “Little Italy” character, and by the 1920s over sixty thousand residents claimed Italian ancestry, supporting five Italian-language newspapers.

Washington Square, one of the city's oldest public squares, has anchored community life since before San Francisco's incorporation, with Saints Peter and Paul Church rising across the street as an emblem of that Italian heritage. Decades later, the same streets around City Lights Bookstore became the center of the 1950s Beat Generation.

From Italian bakeries to Beat-era bookstores, North Beach has always drawn people who make a place their own, and MY-NHD's collection is cut for anyone who claims this corner of the city as theirs.
