North Kenwood takes its name from the broader Kenwood community, itself named by Dr. John A. Kennicott after his family's ancestral estate in Scotland when he settled here in the 1850s seeking respite from the crowded city. The neighborhood's row houses began rising in the late nineteenth century, and unlike much of the lakefront to its north, the area was untouched by the Great Chicago Fire of 1871, allowing this masonry architecture to survive intact for well over a century.

In June 1993, the Commission on Chicago Landmarks designated North Kenwood its own Chicago Landmark District, distinct from Kenwood proper, in recognition of its concentration of late-nineteenth-century masonry row houses, many clustered around Berkeley Avenue and 45th Street. The extension of the elevated train line into the neighborhood in 1907, with a terminus built at 42nd Street in 1910, spurred a wave of apartment construction that filled out the district.

Distinct enough in its architecture to earn its own landmark designation apart from its parent community, North Kenwood wears its nineteenth-century bones openly. MY-NHD's collection marks that singular architectural identity.
