North Mayfair takes its name from a Chicago & North Western Railway station and post office established in 1882, when the area — then known as Montrose — was still farmland along Chicago's northwest edge. Annexed to the city in 1889, the neighborhood's modern identity solidified after 1929, when twenty-three residents formed what became the North Mayfair Improvement Association. Between 1913 and 1930, a construction boom of Chicago-style brick bungalows transformed the area into one of the city's defining residential blocks, with growth accelerating sharply between 1919 and 1923.

That building era survives largely intact today: the North Mayfair Historic Bungalow District carries a listing on the National Register of Historic Places, and the neighborhood still backs onto LaBagh Woods, a Cook County forest preserve along the North Branch of the Chicago River that has anchored the area's western edge for generations.
