North Valley is the colloquial and planning name for the Berryessa district of northeastern San José, the last residential section of the city before the boundary with Milpitas. The area takes its historical identity from the Berryessa family — a prominent Californio lineage of Basque-Spanish origin that arrived in California as part of the De Anza expedition in the late eighteenth century and became major landholders across the northern Santa Clara Valley. The North Valley landscape was once covered in apricot and prune orchards that contributed to the valley's nickname as the Valley of Heart's Delight, and the J.F. Flickinger Fruit Packing Company operated near present-day Hostetter Road as one of the largest packing operations in the valley.

Suburban development arrived during the 1960s and 1970s, replacing the orchards with the single-family neighborhoods that characterize North Valley today. The San José Flea Market, established on North Capitol Avenue in 1960, has been a continuous community institution for more than six decades and draws tens of thousands of visitors weekly. The Berryessa/North San José BART station, which opened in June 2020 as the first phase of the Silicon Valley BART extension, has made North Valley one of the region's most significant transit hubs, transforming the district's connectivity to the broader Bay Area.
