Neighborhood History

Northgate-Waverly takes its hyphenated name from the two avenues — Northgate and Waverly — that define the neighborhood's residential heart, a naming convention reflecting the district's identity as the area between these two parallel streets in North Oakland. Dating to circa 1900, the neighborhood developed alongside Oakland's downtown commercial expansion and the spread of apartment living that characterized North Oakland's early 20th-century residential density. The Fox Theater on Telegraph Avenue — the 1928 atmospheric movie palace designed by architects Weeks and Day and listed on the National Register of Historic Places, now a major live music and events venue — lies within the broader Northgate-Waverly area, anchoring the neighborhood's connection to Oakland's Uptown arts and entertainment corridor. Kaiser Permanente's Oakland Medical Center on Broadway — one of the largest hospitals in the East Bay and the flagship facility of the Kaiser Permanente healthcare network founded in Oakland — provides the neighborhood's most significant institutional presence. Telegraph Avenue connects Northgate-Waverly to the Temescal District to the north and downtown Oakland to the south. That proximity to Oakland's civic and cultural core is the spirit behind the MY-NHD Northgate-Waverly collection.

Northgate-Waverly combines the names of its two main avenues—Northgate and Waverly—that demarcate the neighborhood’s heart. Dating to about 1900, it flourished with the expansion of downtown and proximity to major routes. Historical forces included commercial development and the evolution of apartment living. Landmarks are the Northgate Avenue business district and Waverly’s stately apartment blocks. Today, Northgate-Waverly is prized for its proximity to the arts, walkable amenities, and a multi-generational population invested in neighborhood activism.
