Neighborhood History
Norwood Park East grew out of the Village of Norwood Park, platted in 1868 and named for Henry Ward Beecher's 1868 novel Norwood, or Village Life in New England — with "Park" appended since another Illinois post office already carried the Norwood name. Investors were drawn to the area's open spaces and clean water, particularly after the Great Chicago Fire of 1871 sent many families north in search of a quieter setting. The village incorporated in 1874 and was annexed to Chicago in 1893, and the section east of the original townsite grew alongside it as a residential extension bounded by the North Branch of the Chicago River.
St. Thecla Catholic Church and School anchors the neighborhood's east side, its parish grounds among the area's enduring institutions. The Roden Branch of the Chicago Public Library, serving residents along the neighborhood's main corridors, has stood as a civic fixture for generations of local families.
From riverside streets platted for New England-style village living to a parish that has outlasted a century of change, Norwood Park East carries a quiet, settled history worth wearing close to home.
