Neighborhood History

Norwood Park West carries forward the same founding story as its sister neighborhoods: platted in 1868 as the village of Norwood Park, named for Henry Ward Beecher's novel Norwood, or Village Life in New England, and annexed to Chicago in 1893 after two decades as an independent village. The westernmost section, bounded by Devon Avenue, Harlem Avenue, the Kennedy Expressway, and Canfield Road, developed later than the historic village core, filling in through the twentieth century with the curvilinear streets and generous lots the original planners favored.

Resurrection Medical Center has anchored the neighborhood's western edge for decades, while Immaculate Conception Catholic Church and School serves generations of parish families nearby. Edison Park Elementary School, despite its name, sits within Norwood Park West rather than neighboring Edison Park — a quirk of boundary history still noted by longtime residents.

From hospital corridors to parish pews, Norwood Park West has grown into a self-contained corner of the old village — a history worth carrying with you beyond its borders.
