Oak Knoll takes its name from the oak-covered hillside terrain of East Oakland and from the Oak Knoll Naval Medical Center — the United States Navy hospital that occupied the site from its construction in 1942 through its closure in 1996, when the Base Realignment and Closure process transferred the property to the City of Oakland. The 187-acre former naval campus off Fontaine Street and Keller Avenue represents one of the largest urban land redevelopment projects in Oakland's recent history, with plans for mixed residential, commercial, and open space uses taking shape across successive development phases since the Navy's departure. The site's historic structures — including the Naval Medical Center's original 1940s buildings — are documented in the City of Oakland's redevelopment records and represent the neighborhood's most significant architectural legacy. The East Bay Regional Parks trail network connects the upper Oak Knoll slopes to the Leona Canyon Regional Open Space Preserve to the east, providing the natural open space access that defines the neighborhood's hillside character.
