The neighborhood developed as a working-class residential enclave for the families connected to local industry and the East Bay rail network, its modest flatland streets reflecting the practical character of early 20th-century East Oakland suburban development. Fremont High School on MacArthur Boulevard — one of Oakland Unified School District's oldest high schools, founded in 1912 — serves Oak Tree and the surrounding East Oakland flatland communities as the area's most significant institutional anchor.
