Oakland is historically the site of Oakland Cemetery, founded in 1850 when the City of Atlanta purchased six acres to serve as a rural garden cemetery for the young, growing town. Originally called Atlanta Cemetery, it was renamed Oakland in 1872 due to the many oak and magnolia trees on the grounds. The cemetery, which expanded to 48 acres, reflects Atlanta’s history and culture through its monuments and landscape. Although not a residential neighborhood per se, Oakland Cemetery is a vital historic landmark in the city core, surrounded today by evolving urban districts
