Neighborhood History

Oakland began as Cleaverville, named for industrialist Charles Cleaver, who purchased 22 acres near 38th Street and Lake Michigan in 1851 and built a soap factory company town complete with commissary, church, and worker housing. Real estate developers subdivided and renamed the area Oakland in 1871, and the neighborhood grew steadily between 1872 and 1905 as part of Chicago's expanding South Side, annexed to the city in stages in 1863 and 1889.

Monument Baptist Church on Oakwood Boulevard, modeled after Boston's Trinity Church, remains one of the neighborhood's most striking late-nineteenth-century landmarks. Along the lakefront, Oakwood/41st Street Beach in Burnham Park has drawn residents for generations, while the grand homes of Drexel Boulevard recall Oakland's earlier era as one of Chicago's most desirable addresses.

From a soap-factory company town to a Chicago Landmark district recognized in 1992, Oakland's history runs deeper than its half-square-mile footprint — a legacy worth wearing on your sleeve.
