Neighborhood History
Oakmore takes its name from the oak-studded hills that surround it — a compound of oak and the Old English mor, meaning open land or heath — and was developed in 1926 as part of Oakland's hillside residential expansion, its curving streets lined with Mediterranean and Spanish Revival homes built for the families seeking suburban hillside character with city access. The Leimert Bridge spanning Sausal Creek — a notable early 20th-century concrete arch bridge on MacArthur Boulevard that carries the primary route connecting the Oakmore and Dimond neighborhoods — is the neighborhood's most distinctive piece of civil engineering heritage and a City of Oakland landmark. Sausal Creek runs through the neighborhood's lower edge as part of the 14-mile urban watershed managed by the Sausal Creek Watershed group and designated as a restoration priority by the City of Oakland's Public Works Agency. Oakmore Park provides the neighborhood's primary community green space, while MacArthur Boulevard connects Oakmore to the Dimond District's shops and services below. The Montclair District lies above to the east, giving Oakmore residents access to Montclair Village's independent commercial corridor. That combination of hillside architecture, creek watershed, and bridge heritage is the spirit behind the MY-NHD Oakmore collection.
