Neighborhood History

Oakridge is a Scarborough neighbourhood bounded by Victoria Park Avenue to the west, Warden Avenue to the east, Massey Creek to the north and the rail line to the south, with Danforth Avenue running through it. Its school history runs back more than a century. Oakridge Public School was built in 1913 to replace S.S. No. 12, a one-room schoolhouse that had been destroyed by fire, and it was enlarged in 1916 and 1922 before a second building went up in 1925.

Both buildings were demolished in 1967 and replaced by the school at 110 Byng Avenue, now Oakridge Junior Public School; the 1925 datestone was preserved on Danforth Avenue. Victoria Park and Warden stations on Line 2 serve the neighbourhood. In 2014 the City of Toronto named Oakridge one of its Neighbourhood Improvement Areas, and many residents speak Bengali, Urdu or Tamil at home. Scarborough became part of the amalgamated City of Toronto in 1998.

The Oakridge tee is for the neighbours along the Danforth between Victoria Park and Warden.
