Oceanview was first established as a community in the 1910s, centered on the intersection of Sagamore Street and San Jose Avenue in the city's far southwestern corner. Growth stayed modest for decades until the post-World War II housing boom, when returning veterans and their families filled in the neighborhood's remaining open lots.

Oceanview became one of San Francisco's most significant African American enclaves in the postwar decades, its population climbing from a small share of residents in 1950 to a clear majority by 1960 as families moved in from the Western Addition and beyond. Oceanview Playground has anchored the community through every wave of that change.

Oceanview's identity was built one postwar block at a time by families claiming a foothold in the city, and MY-NHD's collection honors that same spirit of putting down roots in San Francisco's far southwest corner.
