Old Butchertown refers to the original meatpacking district of San Francisco, located in the area now known as Dogpatch, along the waterfront south of Potrero Hill near the intersection of Third Street and Cesar Chavez Street. Following the California Gold Rush, San Francisco's rapid population growth created demand for centralized meat processing, and slaughterhouses established themselves in this waterfront zone in the 1850s and early 1860s, drawn by the area's proximity to the bay, the industrial lands of Potrero Point, and a degree of remove from the city center. The district was known as Butchertown through this era. By the late 1860s the city was forcing the most noxious industries further south; in 1868 a 'Butchers' Reservation' was established on Islais Creek tidal flats, and by 1877 virtually all the slaughterhouses had relocated to what became New Butchertown, leaving the original Butchertown area to evolve into the mixed industrial-residential district now called Dogpatch.

The area retains echoes of its industrial origins in the Dogpatch neighborhood's warehouse fabric and in Pier 70, the historic Union Iron Works shipyard site adjacent to the former Butchertown land, now undergoing adaptive reuse as a mixed-use district. The Dogpatch neighborhood's name itself traces to this era's industrial character, with packs of dogs associated with the meatpacking operations.
