Neighborhood History

Old Edgebrook was platted in 1894 as a private railroad suburb, its large stately homes built for executives of the Chicago, Milwaukee and St. Paul Railroad. The compact district sits within the Forest Glen community area, its handful of blocks surrounded entirely by Cook County Forest Preserve land — a rare arrangement that has kept the enclave secluded since its earliest days.

The Edgebrook Golf Course borders the district on one side, while Cook County Forest Preserves encircle it on every other. The city designated Old Edgebrook a Chicago Landmark District on December 14, 1988, and a historical marker still stands at the corner of Prescott and Livermore Avenues marking that recognition.

Built for railroad men and preserved by its own seclusion, Old Edgebrook's century-old streets carry a quiet distinction worth wearing beyond the woods that surround it.
