Old Irving Park traces its roots to 1843, when Major Noble purchased a 160-acre farm on what would become the neighborhood's land. Four New York investors bought the farm in 1869 and, seeing the success of nearby suburban developments, subdivided it into an exclusive suburb, striking a deal with the Chicago and North Western Railroad to build a station in exchange for scheduled stops. The community was annexed to Chicago in 1889 along with the rest of Jefferson Township.

The John and Clara Merchant House and the Race House, both dating to the neighborhood's earliest development, remain designated Chicago landmarks today. The Dutch Reformed Church and Society of Irving Park, built in 1872 and remodeled in 1908, served as the area's only house of worship for over a decade, while the Grayland Metra station still marks the rail stop that helped build the neighborhood.

From a negotiated railroad stop to a neighborhood of landmark homes, Old Irving Park's history was built on the same ambition its residents carry today — a heritage worth wearing home.
