Neighborhood History

Old Oakland is the city's original downtown core — the neighborhood developed in 1871 around the western rail terminus where the transcontinental railroad met the ferry connections to San Francisco, its Victorian commercial buildings and street markets making it the commercial heart of 19th-century Oakland. The neighborhood's most significant surviving landmarks are the Victorian-era commercial buildings along 9th Street between Broadway and Washington Street — a restored block of Italianate storefronts representing one of the most intact collections of 19th-century commercial architecture remaining in the Bay Area, listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Swan's Market on Washington Street — a 1917 public market building that has undergone adaptive reuse as a mixed-use community development — is Old Oakland's most celebrated civic revival project, transforming a historic market hall into housing, restaurants, and community space. The City of Oakland's Preservation Program and the Oakland Heritage Alliance have documented the neighborhood's architectural heritage extensively, making Old Oakland one of the most thoroughly recorded historic districts in the East Bay. That layered Victorian commercial heritage — preserved, restored, and made contemporary — is the spirit behind the MY-NHD Old Oakland collection.
