Pacific Heights takes its name from its own geography, a high ridge above the bay first developed in the 1870s with modest Victorian homes. The Leale House on Pacific Avenue, built in 1853, is the oldest structure still standing in the neighborhood, though most of Pacific Heights dates to after the 1906 earthquake, when wealthy families rebuilt here on ground the fire never reached.

That rebuilding produced the densest concentration of Victorian, Edwardian, and Beaux-Arts mansions in the city. The Haas-Lilienthal House, built in 1886 and now a museum operated by San Francisco Heritage, survives as the only intact Victorian-era private home in the city regularly open to the public, a rare window into that Gilded Age.

Pacific Heights carried San Francisco's fortune up the hill after the fire, and MY-NHD's collection carries a piece of that ridge-top history to anyone who calls it home.
