Neighborhood History

Park Manor was the last of five smaller neighborhoods — alongside Grand Crossing, Brookline, Essex, and Brookdale — to develop within what became the Greater Grand Crossing community, its earliest residents predominantly of East Coast Yankee stock. The broader area's growth traces back to an 1853 railroad collision at the nearby Grand Crossing junction that killed eighteen people, spurring safety improvements and industrial development that drew settlement south from the city center. Park Manor itself filled in later, from 1915 to 1927, when developers raised 263 Craftsman-style brick bungalows across its blocks.

That bungalow-era construction survives largely intact within the South Park Manor Historic District, listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2004. Meyering Park, established in 1926 and named for World War I veteran and Distinguished Service Cross recipient William D. Meyering, has anchored recreation in the neighborhood for a century. St. Columbanus Catholic Church, built in 1923 on East 71st Street, became one of Chicago's oldest African American Catholic parishes after the neighborhood's racial transition in the 1950s.

From a Yankee railroad suburb to a bungalow-lined National Register district, Park Manor's century of change is a history worth wearing on your own city block.
