Neighborhood History
Parkwoods is a North York neighbourhood south of Highway 401, west of Victoria Park Avenue, north of Lawrence Avenue East and east of the Don Valley Parkway, sometimes called Parkwoods-Donalda. The Gray family settled in the valley in 1825 and ran mills there, a gristmill, sawmill and distillery known as the Don Mills. In the 1910s mining magnate David Alexander Dunlap bought about 600 acres south of York Mills Road, between Don Mills Road and Victoria Park, and named it Donalda Farm.
The farm grew to about 40 buildings, and the Dunlap residence was completed in 1920. In 1960 part of the farm opened as the Donalda Club, which uses the Dunlap residence as its clubhouse. The southern residential area was built between 1957 and 1962. Between 1987 and 1990, Royal Ontario Museum archaeologist Dr. Mima Kapches excavated in the neighbourhood, finding artifacts dated to about 4,700 BC and Early Iroquoian pottery from around AD 1000. Brookbanks Park follows Deerlick Creek, a tributary of the Don River. North York became part of the amalgamated City of Toronto in 1998.
The Parkwoods tee is for the neighbours of the old Donalda Farm, between the Parkway and Victoria Park.
