Neighborhood History

Patten is a North Oakland neighborhood whose identity has been anchored since the mid-20th century by Patten University — founded in 1944 by the Church of God (Cleveland, Tennessee) as a Christian liberal arts institution — whose campus on MacArthur Boulevard gave the surrounding residential neighborhood its name and its character as an education-oriented community. Patten University operated on the MacArthur Boulevard campus for over six decades, offering undergraduate and graduate programs until its closure in 2014; its successor institution, Patten Academy of Christian Education, continues to serve the community from the same campus. The MacArthur Boulevard corridor connects Patten to the broader North Oakland commercial and transit network, while the surrounding residential streets of early-20th-century Craftsman and bungalow homes reflect the neighborhood's development alongside Oakland's streetcar expansion circa 1914. That educational legacy — a neighborhood shaped by the presence of a college campus across multiple generations — is the spirit behind the MY-NHD Patten collection.

Patten is named in honor of Patten University, which occupied the neighborhood for more than a century. Founded circa 1914, the area developed to serve students, faculty, and middle-class homebuyers attracted to its leafy streets. Key landmarks are the original Patten University campus and Patten Academy of Christian Education. Today, Patten is a unique mix of longtime Oakland families, renters, and recent arrivals, supporting local schools, public spaces, and cultural enrichment programs that reflect the neighborhood’s educational legacy.
