Peralta Creek takes its name from the waterway named for the Peralta family — the original grantees of Rancho San Antonio, the Spanish land grant awarded to Sergeant Luis Manuel Peralta in 1820 that encompassed virtually all of what is now Oakland, Berkeley, Alameda, and San Leandro. Established circa 1870 as one of East Oakland's earliest creekside settlements, the neighborhood centered on the agricultural and small-scale industrial activity that characterized the flatland creek corridors before Oakland's residential grid arrived. The Peralta Hacienda Historical Park on 34th Avenue — the restored site of the Peralta family's adobe compound, operated as a museum and community park — is the neighborhood's most significant historic landmark and one of the most important Mexican-era heritage sites in the East Bay. Peralta Creek itself has been the subject of ongoing urban creek restoration managed by community volunteers and the City of Oakland's Public Works Agency, its riparian corridor representing a tangible connection to the pre-urban landscape. Fruitvale Avenue connects the neighborhood to the Fruitvale BART station and the broader Fruitvale District commercial network. That deep land-grant heritage, sustained by community stewardship, is the foundation of the MY-NHD Peralta Creek collection.
