Neighborhood History

Piedmont Avenue is a North Oakland neighborhood established circa 1876 as a streetcar suburb along the road leading up toward the independent city of Piedmont — its commercial corridor developing into one of Oakland's most enduring independent retail streets. The Piedmont Theatre on Piedmont Avenue — opened in 1947 and one of the longest continuously operating cinemas in the East Bay — anchors the neighborhood's cultural identity as a destination for independent film and community gathering. Mountain View Cemetery's grand Piedmont Avenue entrance — the Frederick Law Olmsted-designed rural cemetery established in 1863 — provides the neighborhood's most historically significant neighboring landmark, its gates a defining feature of the streetscape. The Piedmont Avenue commercial corridor has sustained an independent bookshop, restaurant, and specialty retail character across successive generations of urban change. Piedmont Avenue Elementary School — an Oakland Unified School District campus — has served the neighborhood's family character for generations. That combination of streetcar-era origins, independent cinema, and community-sustained commercial street is the spirit behind the MY-NHD Piedmont Avenue collection.
