Piedmont Hills is a residential neighborhood in northeastern San José, its name derived from the Italian piedmont — literally "foot of the mountain" — reflecting its position at the base of the Diablo Range foothills where the valley floor begins to rise toward the hills above Berryessa. The neighborhood sits on land that was part of the orchard country of the northern Santa Clara Valley through the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, covered in apricot and prune trees before San José's postwar expansion transformed the landscape.

Suburban development arrived in the 1960s and 1970s, and Piedmont Hills High School opened in 1965 as the neighborhood's first major civic institution. The school, part of the East Side Union High School District, helped anchor the community's identity and remains one of the top-rated public high schools in San José. The Berryessa district's orchard past is still visible in the name of Piedmont Road, one of the streets that formerly ran through apricot orchards and is now a main arterial through the neighborhood. Cataldi Park, one of North San José's large community parks, serves as the recreational center for Piedmont Hills, while Alum Rock Park and the Sierra Vista Open Space Preserve provide access to the foothills terrain that gives the neighborhood its name.
