Neighborhood History

Pilsen takes its name from Plzeň, the city in present-day Czechia from which many early residents originated. Established during the 1870s following population shifts after the Great Chicago Fire, the neighborhood developed around industrial employment and nearby rail infrastructure. Manufacturing and immigrant settlement served as the primary forces behind its growth.

Permanent landmarks include the National Museum of Mexican Art and Thalia Hall. While later generations reshaped the neighborhood's identity, these enduring landmarks illustrate Pilsen's evolution from a Czech immigrant district into one of Chicago's most significant centers of Mexican American culture.

Pilsen's history reflects successive waves of immigration and community-building tied to industry and transportation. MY-NHD apparel acknowledges that continuing story through a neighborhood identity rooted in both local history and cultural continuity.
