Polish Downtown traces its roots to 1851, when Anthony Smarzewski-Schermann settled on the prairie north of the Chicago River's North Branch, laying the groundwork for the area known as the Polish Patch. The neighborhood grew explosively after St. Stanislaus Kostka Parish was founded in 1867, followed by Holy Trinity Polish Mission in 1872; together the two churches formed the largest Catholic parish in the world. By 1890, half of all Chicago's Poles called this district home, centered on the three-way intersection of Division, Ashland, and Milwaukee Avenues.

That intersection, known as Polonia Triangle, functioned as the capital of American Polonia, hosting the headquarters of nearly every major Polish organization in the country, from the Polish National Alliance to the Polish Daily News. Division Street earned the nickname "Polish Broadway" for its dense strip of shops, banks, and workingman's bars, a role that intensified after World War II when as many as 150,000 Polish displaced persons settled here between 1939 and 1959. St. Stanislaus Kostka Church still stands as the parish's mother church today.

From a lone settler's prairie claim to the organizing capital of Polish America, Polish Downtown's history is written into every street corner it touches — a legacy worth wearing wherever your own roots lead.
