Neighborhood History

Potrero Hill takes its name from the Spanish word for pasture, after 18th-century missionaries grazed cattle on the hill they called Potrero Nuevo. The Long Bridge, built in 1865, connected the once-isolated hill to the rest of the city, and industry along the waterfront below drew waves of Scots, Irish, Russian, and Slovenian immigrants who settled the slopes above their jobs.

Potrero Hill's serpentine-rock foundation left it largely undamaged by the 1906 earthquake, drawing still more residents displaced from South of Market. The Potrero Hill Neighborhood House, designed by architect Julia Morgan in 1922, has served the community for a century as its social anchor.
