Neighborhood History

Presidio Heights takes its name from its position bordering the Presidio, the Spanish military outpost established in 1776 that anchors the neighborhood's western edge. The neighborhood's name predates the 1906 earthquake, and most of its homes were built in the early 20th century in the Edwardian style favored by the established families who settled this high ground.

The Presidio itself passed from Spanish, then Mexican, then United States Army control before its 1994 transfer to the National Park Service, and that military history still shapes the quiet, tree-lined streets beside it. Sacramento Street grew into the neighborhood's commercial spine, while what is now Presidio Wall Playground has served neighborhood families since the 1920s.

Presidio Heights has spent over a century living quietly beside a fort turned national park, and MY-NHD's collection is cut for those who know this understated corner of the city.
