Pulaski Park takes its name from the 3.8-acre park at its heart, designed by landscape architect Jens Jensen for the West Park Commission and completed in 1914, honoring Casimir Pulaski, the Polish soldier who fought in the American Revolutionary War. To build it, the Commission razed or relocated ninety buildings in this densely settled Polish neighborhood, displacing some 1,200 residents from what had been designated "Park No. 5." Architect William Carbys Zimmerman's four-story fieldhouse, with its two gymnasiums and courtyard auditorium, opened at the park's north end the same year.

The park and fieldhouse were listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1981 and designated a Chicago Landmark in 2003. The neighborhood's working-class Polish character persisted for decades — Congressman Dan Rostenkowski ran his political operations from a building at 1372 Evergreen Avenue that his family still owns — even as the Bloomingdale Line elevated rail corridor marked its northern edge and the Chicago River curled past Goose Island to the east.

From a razed Polish tenement block to a landmark public park, Pulaski Park's ground was reshaped once for the public good and has held that purpose ever since — a history worth wearing on your own walk through the neighborhood.
