RANCH Triangle takes its name from an acronym of its own boundaries — Racine Avenue, Armitage Avenue, North Avenue, the Chicago River, and Halsted Street — within the Lincoln Park community. The neighborhood's commercial spine, Armitage Avenue, was known simply as Center Street through the 1870s and '80s, served by a horse-drawn trolley that was electrified by 1890, when the street was renamed for American clergyman Thomas Armitage. The Armitage 'L' station opened in 1900 and remains one of the oldest continuously operating train stations in the United States.

By 1905 the Armitage-Halsted corridor had become a full-fledged commercial district, and its Victorian storefronts — pressed metal cornices, bay windows, turrets, and terra-cotta ornament — earned it Chicago Landmark status in 2002. One entryway at 1966 North Halsted still carries terra-cotta cast from a mold designed by a then-unknown architect named Louis H. Sullivan, while the Gepperth Brothers meat market, open at 1964 North Halsted since 1915, remains one of the corridor's oldest continuously run businesses.

From a horse-trolley street to a landmarked Victorian shopping district, RANCH Triangle's storefronts have quietly kept their own history in plain sight for well over a century — worth wearing on your next walk down Armitage.
