Ravenswood Manor was platted in 1907 by New York real estate developer William Elmer Harmon, who marketed it as "The First Suburb Beautiful — of the New Chicago" and used an innovative installment plan to make homeownership accessible to middle-class families. Harmon built trellised archways over the neighborhood's main entrances, planted trees and flowers along its parkways, and set aside land for a "Motor Boat Colony" along the Chicago River's North Branch, envisioning the waterway as a gateway to Lake Michigan boating.

Distinctive stone pillars, originally erected as street entrance markers, still stand throughout the neighborhood today. Concerned property owners organized the Ravenswood Manor-Gardens Community Club in 1914 after slow early sales, and the group's companion park district acquired land for Ravenswood Manor Park the following year — a triangular, 0.83-acre site with a pergola and small office building that remains the neighborhood's gathering place. Arts and Crafts bungalows still line the tree-shaded streets Harmon platted more than a century ago.

From an installment-plan suburb beautiful to a pillar-marked riverside enclave, Ravenswood Manor's careful planning still shapes daily life along its namesake bend in the river — a legacy worth wearing on your own walk home.
