Redwood Heights takes its name from the redwood trees that characterize the upper Oakland hills terrain it occupies, and was developed circa 1925 as Oakland's hillside residential expansion extended along Redwood Road and the Skyline Boulevard corridor. Its mid-century homes and wooded streets were built for the families who sought the combination of natural surroundings and Bay Area urban access that defined the Oakland hills residential experience. Redwood Heights Recreation Center — operated by the City of Oakland on Mountain Boulevard — is the neighborhood's primary community facility, offering youth programming, sports, and community events that have anchored neighborhood life across generations. Redwood Regional Park borders the neighborhood to the east, one of the East Bay Regional Parks District's most significant natural preserves — protecting over 1,830 acres of second-growth redwood forest and connecting Redwood Heights residents directly to the regional trail network. The Oakland Zoo on Golf Links Road lies to the south, providing the neighborhood with an additional major institutional and recreational neighbor within the Knowland Park campus managed by the Conservation Society of California.
