Neighborhood History
Neighborhood History
Reservoir Hill takes its name from the water storage infrastructure that occupied its elevated terrain as Oakland developed its municipal water system in the early 20th century — hilltop reservoirs that served the city's growing flatland population and gave this North Oakland neighborhood both its elevated character and its functional civic identity. The neighborhood developed circa 1910 as residential streets were laid out around and below the reservoir site, attracting the working and professional families who valued the elevated position and its views across North Oakland toward the Bay. Mosswood Park lies immediately to the south — the historic Oakland park named for the Mosswood estate, whose Recreation Center and century-old grounds provide the neighborhood's primary public green space and community gathering anchor. MacArthur Boulevard runs along the neighborhood's southern edge as the primary commercial and transit corridor connecting Reservoir Hill to the broader North Oakland network, while the Telegraph Avenue corridor lies to the west. That combination of civic infrastructure history, elevated residential character, and proximity to one of North Oakland's most significant parks defines the MY-NHD Reservoir Hill collection.
