Ridgemont is one of Oakland's younger hillside neighborhoods, developed in 1970 as the last significant wave of residential construction extended along the upper Skyline Boulevard ridge — its name evoking both the elevated terrain and the mont suffix used across Oakland's hillside community naming tradition. Carved from former ranchland and open grassland on the ridge above Redwood Heights, Ridgemont offered mid-century and contemporary single-family homes with panoramic Bay Area views at a time when the East Bay hills were among the most desirable residential environments in Northern California. Ridgemont Park provides the neighborhood's primary community green space. Redwood Regional Park lies immediately to the east via the East Bay Regional Parks trail network, connecting Ridgemont residents to over 1,830 acres of second-growth redwood forest and the regional trail system. Skyline High School on Hillmont Drive — one of OUSD's largest comprehensive high schools, opened in 1963 — serves as the primary institutional anchor for Ridgemont and the surrounding upper Oakland hills communities.
