Rincon Hill takes its name from the Spanish word for corner, after Rincon Point, the small headland that once extended into the bay below it. Gold Rush wealth turned the hundred-foot rise into San Francisco's first fashionable residential address in the early 1850s, home to figures like General William Tecumseh Sherman and banker William C. Ralston.

The controversial Second Street Cut of 1869 sliced the hill in two to ease wagon traffic to the docks, and the neighborhood never fully recovered its standing before the 1906 fire destroyed what remained. Construction of the Bay Bridge in the 1930s anchored its western span directly to the hill, burying much of old Rincon Hill beneath the approach that still defines it today.

Rincon Hill has been cut, rebuilt, and built over more than almost any other San Francisco neighborhood, and MY-NHD's collection honors that resilience for anyone who calls this bridge-side hill home.
