Rincon South takes its name from Rancho Rincón de los Esteros — the "Corner of the Estuaries" — a Mexican-era land grant of more than 6,300 acres awarded in 1838 to Californio ranchero Ignacio Alviso by Governor Juan Bautista Alvarado. The rancho encompassed the tidal marshlands and wetlands at the southern edge of San Francisco Bay, and the name rincon — Spanish for corner or nook — described the geographic feature where the Guadalupe River and Coyote Creek met the bay. The broader Rincon district, including Rincon South, occupies much of this former rancho land in North San José.

For most of the twentieth century the Rincon area remained industrial and underdeveloped, serving as San José's port of commercial activity before technology transformed the valley. In 1998 the City of San José established a specific plan for Rincon South, designating it as a distinct neighborhood from the larger Rincon de los Esteros district to the north. Today Rincon South sits between the convergence of US Highway 101 and Interstate 880, functioning as a mixed commercial and light-industrial corridor at the gateway to the broader North San José technology district that has become one of the highest concentrations of high-tech company campuses in Silicon Valley.
