River Oaks is a planned business and residential district in North San José, taking its name from the oak woodland and riparian landscape that once bordered the Guadalupe River and Coyote Creek at the southern edge of San Francisco Bay. The neighborhood occupies former marshland and industrial land at the northern apex of San José, where the city's boundaries reach closest to the bay — a landscape that was once part of Rancho Rincón de los Esteros, the 1838 Mexican-era land grant awarded to Californio ranchero Ignacio Alviso.

The River Oaks Business Park, developed during the 1980s and 1990s as part of San José's strategic push to attract technology companies to North San José, became one of the city's key commercial corridors. The Don Edwards San Francisco Bay National Wildlife Refuge, established in 1974 as the first urban national wildlife refuge in the United States, borders the district to the north — protecting the tidal wetlands and migratory bird habitat that the Alviso rancho once overlooked. Coyote Creek, one of the two major waterways draining the Santa Clara Valley into the bay, runs along the district's eastern edge, and the Coyote Creek Trail follows its banks through the neighborhood.
