Neighborhood History
Neighborhood History
Rockridge takes its name from the rocky terrain and ridge topography of this section of North Oakland's hills, and was developed circa 1909 as a planned residential district of Craftsman bungalows and period homes along College Avenue — the commercial spine that connects Rockridge to the UC Berkeley campus to the north. The Rockridge BART station on College Avenue — one of the original stations on the BART system opened in 1972 — is the neighborhood's primary transit anchor and has sustained College Avenue's character as one of the East Bay's most walkable independent retail streets, with bookshops, restaurants, and specialty shops that have made Rockridge a destination for residents across North Oakland and the Berkeley hills. The Claremont Country Club on Tunnel Road — founded in 1904 and one of the oldest private golf and tennis clubs in the East Bay — anchors the neighborhood's upper edge, its grounds a significant piece of the neighborhood's landscape heritage. Temescal Creek runs along the neighborhood's western boundary as part of the urban creek system connecting the Oakland hills to the flatlands. That combination of Craftsman architecture, walkable transit-oriented commerce, and hillside character is the spirit behind the MY-NHD Rockridge collection.
