Rosehill takes its name from the 350-acre cemetery at its center, itself named through a clerical accident: local farmer Hiram Roe refused to sell his land for a new burial ground unless it was named in his honor, and a city clerk misspelled "Roe's Hill" as "Rosehill" when the deal was recorded. Founded in 1859 on the highest natural elevation within Chicago's city limits, Rosehill Cemetery became the largest in the city, and the residential streets that grew up around it took on its name as their own.

The cemetery's castellated Gothic entrance gate, built of Joliet limestone by architect William W. Boyington, was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1975. Inside, the 1914 Rosehill Mausoleum remains the largest in Chicago, its corridors lit by stained glass windows from Louis Comfort Tiffany's studio, while the English Gothic Horatio N. May Chapel, completed in 1899, still hosts services for a neighborhood built block by block around its walls.

From a farmer's stubborn deal to Chicago's largest cemetery to a quietly distinct residential enclave, Rosehill's history is carved into its own gates — a legacy worth wearing wherever your own roots lie.
