Neighborhood History
Neighborhood History
Rosemoor takes shape as one of the residential districts carved from Roseland, the far South Side community first settled in 1849 by Dutch immigrant families who farmed the high ground they called "de Hooge Prairie." Rosemoor's own streets filled in through the twentieth century along the Michigan Avenue corridor south of 100th Street, developing as a residential extension of the broader Roseland community after its 1892 annexation to Chicago.
Today, a "Welcome to Rosemoor" gateway sign at 100th and Michigan Avenue marks the neighborhood's entrance, a project of the Rosemoor Community Association, which also spearheaded the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial Bridge Initiative — dedicated in a 2011 ceremony and formally marked by an Illinois Department of Transportation sign in 2013. Chicago State University's campus borders the neighborhood's northeast edge, part of the wider Roseland community area's civic and educational anchors.
From a corner of the old Dutch High Prairie to a community with its own gateway sign and memorial bridge, Rosemoor's identity is built block by block within Roseland's larger story — a history worth wearing on your own stretch of Michigan Avenue.
