Saint Francis Wood was established in 1912 when the Mason-McDuffie Company purchased 175 acres of land formerly owned by Adolph Sutro — part of the old Rancho San Miguel land grant — to develop one of San Francisco's premier residential parks. The name was chosen to evoke a harmonious relationship between the planned community and its natural surroundings, honoring San Francisco's patron saint. Duncan McDuffie, inspired by the City Beautiful movement championed by planner Daniel Burnham, engaged the nationally renowned Olmsted Brothers firm to design the curvilinear street plan, and appointed John Galen Howard as the first supervising architect. Howard designed the Beaux-Arts entrance portals on St. Francis Boulevard, the brick-diamond sidewalks, and the first fountain, establishing an architectural standard that successive architects — including Henry Gutterson, Julia Morgan, Willis Polk, and Bernard Maybeck — sustained over the following decades.

Saint Francis Wood is listed on the National Register of Historic Places as a historic district. St. Francis Boulevard, its principal artery, rises through a double row of trees to a terraced plaza and fountain with views toward the Pacific Ocean. The St. Francis Homes Association, founded in 1912, continues to maintain the landscaped parkways, traffic circles, and commons that define the neighborhood's character.
