Neighborhood History

Saint Mary Cemetery is named for the historic Catholic cemetery established in 1863 by the Roman Catholic Diocese of Oakland — one of the oldest Catholic burial grounds in the Bay Area — whose 50 acres on the border of Oakland and the city of Piedmont have served as a significant spiritual and community landmark for over 160 years. The cemetery's Gothic Revival chapel, its notable monuments, and the burial records maintained by the Diocese document the Catholic immigrant communities — Irish, Italian, Portuguese, and later Latino — who built much of early Oakland's residential and commercial fabric. The residential neighborhood that developed around the cemetery's perimeter through the early 20th century reflects the quiet, established character of this corner of North Oakland, its streets lined with period homes whose residents have long valued the green open space the cemetery grounds provide amid the dense urban fabric. Piedmont Avenue's independent commercial corridor lies immediately to the west, connecting the neighborhood to one of the East Bay's most walkable retail and dining streets. Mountain View Cemetery borders the area to the south, making this one of Oakland's most historically layered residential edges. That combination of spiritual heritage, immigrant community history, and quiet residential character is the spirit behind the MY-NHD Saint Mary Cemetery collection.
