San Antonio is a large East Oakland district whose name derives from Rancho San Antonio — the 44,800-acre land grant awarded in 1820 to Luís María Peralta by the last Spanish governor of California in recognition of his decades of military service. Settlement of the area that became San Antonio began in 1851 when entrepreneur J.B. LaRue purchased Peralta land west of San Antonio Creek and built a store and wharf, establishing the commercial nucleus around which the community grew. The San Francisco and Oakland Railroad built a station here, cementing the district's role as a transit hub; the line passed through successive owners and name changes — Brooklyn, then East Oakland — before the surrounding town was annexed by the City of Oakland in 1872.

San Antonio Park at 23rd Avenue has served as the community's civic center for generations, hosting the Chicano Moratorium protest against the Vietnam War in July 1970, the annual Malcolm X Jazz Arts Festival, and decades of neighborhood gatherings that reflect the district's successive waves of African American, Latino, Vietnamese, Cambodian, and other immigrant communities. The Peralta Hacienda Historical Park in nearby Fruitvale preserves the six-acre footprint of the original Peralta family estate and offers the most direct physical connection to the rancho that gave San Antonio its name.
