Santa Fe is an East Oakland neighborhood whose name reflects the presence of the Atchison, Topeka and Santa Fe Railway — one of the great transcontinental rail systems that shaped American commerce in the late 19th century — whose tracks and associated industrial infrastructure anchored this part of the East Oakland flatlands from circa 1869. The neighborhood developed as a working-class residential community alongside the rail yards and light industrial operations that lined the corridor, its modest homes built for the railroad workers, longshoremen, and factory hands who formed the backbone of East Oakland's industrial economy. The Santa Fe Channel — the man-made waterway connecting the San Leandro Bay estuary to the industrial corridor — runs along the neighborhood's eastern edge and now forms part of the Martin Luther King Jr. Regional Shoreline managed by the East Bay Regional Parks District. The 7th Street commercial corridor — one of East Oakland's historic main streets — connects Santa Fe residents to the neighborhood's retail and community services network. International Boulevard runs along the northern edge as the primary transit artery. That working-class railroad heritage, built by the workers who kept the line running, is the foundation of the MY-NHD Santa Fe collection.
