Neighborhood History

Sauganash takes its name from Billy Caldwell, a Mohawk and Irish fur trader nicknamed "Sauganash" — meaning "English-speaking" in Potawatomi — who negotiated the Second Treaty of Prairie du Chien in 1829 and was awarded a 1,600-acre reserve along the Chicago River in return. In 1912, the real estate firm Koester and Zander purchased 260 acres of that former reserve and named their new subdivision after him; the first eight houses went up on Kostner Avenue between 1923 and 1924.

A historical marker at Kilbourn and Rogers Avenues claims to mark the site of an "Old Treaty Elm" where an 1833 treaty was signed — though records show the actual signing took place at Fort Dearborn, and historians suspect Koester and Zander invented the story to lend the new neighborhood some romance. Queen of All Saints Basilica and Sauganash Community Church anchor the neighborhood today, while LaBagh Woods Forest Preserve borders it to the south, part of the same river corridor Caldwell once called home.

From a fur trader's reserve to a developer's marketing legend, Sauganash's history is equal parts fact and folklore — a story worth wearing with a knowing smile.
